Each year at graduation, the University highlights those whose accomplishments exemplify the ideals of Mercy, and whose work and lives reflect the mission and values of the University, in the hopes that the stories inspire the graduates to be distinctive Mercy graduates.

This year’s winner, JaNell LaRue, is a distinctive Mercy graduate who earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degree from GMercyU. Post graduate, she worked in the Admissions Office, and served as director of the Upward Bound program where she showed high school students what it takes to be successful in college. She currently is a member of the Alumni Board.

Upward Bound works with students at Diocesan city high schools who will be the first in their families to attend college. The students attend after-school workshops from October through May, and have the opportunity to attend a four-week residential program at GMercyU in the summer. JeNell encouraged these students to strive for excellence.

Her cheerful demeanor did not go unnoticed on campus. She was always willing to offer words of encouragement, a helping hand or smile. Much like Sister Isabelle Keiss, whom the award honors, JaNell lives Mercy values every day.
