GMercyU Launches First-Ever Fully Funded Nursing Scholarship Honoring Two Sisters of Mercy

Gwynedd Mercy University has established The Sisters of Mercy Legacy Nursing Scholarship, the University’s first-ever fully funded undergraduate nursing scholarship. Created in honor of Sister Mary Thomasina and Sister Virginia Mary, the scholarship is supported by a $1.75 million endowed gift from the Victor and Tara (’72) Menezes Family. This competitive scholarship will cover four years of tuition, fees, room and board, plus an annual stipend for books. It will be awarded to one student every four years, in perpetuity. 

"The Sisters of Mercy Legacy Nursing Scholarship is a lasting tribute to two Sisters of Mercy whose influence spanned continents and generations," said Deanne H. D’Emilio, JD, President of GMercyU. "Since its founding, GMercyU has been rooted in the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy. This scholarship ensures that legacy will live on as we prepare generations of nurses for successful careers and meaningful lives in a global society." 

For future nursing students, the scholarship means the opportunity to pursue their education without the financial burden that can sometimes stand in the way. It also ensures that the legacy of Sister Mary Thomasina and Sister Virginia Mary will continue on as students graduate and become Mercy nurses. 

"This scholarship creates an extraordinary opportunity for a student to pursue a calling in nursing," said Jane H. Tang, PhD, RN, NE-BC, dean of the Frances M. Maguire College of Nursing and Health Professions. "It is a direct reflection of the Sisters of Mercy's commitment to helping students reach their full potential while preparing the skilled, compassionate healthcare professionals our communities need." 

Eligible students must be admitted to GMercyU's BSN program, plan to live on campus all four years, demonstrate financial need based on their FAFSA, and have an incoming unweighted high school GPA of 3.5 or higher. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA and full-time residential status to remain eligible and will carry the title of Sisters of Mercy Legacy Nursing Scholar throughout their time at GMercyU.
