Named in honor of Sister Mary Thomasina and Sister Virginia Mary,  GMercyU's first-ever, fully funded scholarship will remove the financial barriers to a nursing education.

Eligibility 

To be considered for this competitive scholarship, students must:

  • Be admitted into GMercyU's BSN program
  • Plan to live on campus all four years
  • Have financial need as demonstrated through the FAFSA
  • Have an incoming unweighted high school GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale*

Scholarship recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA and full-time residential status to remain eligible, and will carry the title of Sister Mary Thomasina and Sister Virginia Mary Nursing Scholar at Gwynedd Mercy University throughout their time at GMercyU.

*An unweighted GPA is calculated without giving extra points for honors, AP, IB, or other advanced-level courses. Using an unweighted GPA ensures students are evaluated equitably, regarldess of whether their school offers advanced-level courses or uses a grading scale other than 4.0.

Legacy of Mercy

The Sisters of Mercy Legacy Nursing Scholarship was established thanks to a generous $1.75 million endowed gift, marking GMercyU's first-ever fully funded scholarship for nursing students.

Named in honor of Sister Mary Thomasina and Sister Virginia Mary, the scholarship will fund the on-campus education of one Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) student at a time, with a new recipient selected every four years in perpetuity. This competitive scholarship removes the cost of education as a barrier to a nursing career at a time when Pennsylvania and the nation continue to face a persistent nursing workforce shortage.

The Sisters of Mercy Legacy Nursing Scholarship covers tuition, required fees, room and board, and $500 annually toward textbooks for one full-time undergraduate student for all four years of enrollment in GMercyU's BSN program.

The scholarship is named for Sister Mary Thomasina and Sister Virginia Mary, two Sisters of Mercy who taught at Little Flower School in India. Their kindness, compassion, and joyful spirit as teachers left a lasting impression on the donor and the donor’s family. Sister Mary Thomasina encouraged the donor to pursue a nursing education at Gwynedd-Mercy College in the late 1960s. The endowed gift preserves the Sisters' legacy while providing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for future GMercyU nursing students.

This scholarship creates an extraordinary opportunity for a student to pursue a calling in nursing. It is a direct reflection of the Sisters of Mercy’s commitment to helping students reach their full potential while preparing the skilled, compassionate healthcare professionals our communities need.
