Counseling Student Publishes Novel Exploring Mental Health and Resilience

Arthur L. Jenkins, a student in Gwynedd Mercy University's Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, published "The Prince of Brown: A Fictional Memoir," a novel that explores themes of mental health, resilience, identity, and personal growth.

The publication represents a significant milestone in Arthur's journey as both a writer and mental health professional.

"Publishing a book has been a longtime goal of mine," Arthur said. "I wanted to create a story that was thoughtful, engaging, and reflective of experiences that are often overlooked."

While completing his graduate studies at GMercyU, Arthur has balanced coursework with his roles as a Group Therapist at The Horsham Clinic and a Crisis Counselor at Montgomery County Emergency Service. He says the University's Counseling program has helped him strengthen the critical thinking, communication, and research skills that contributed to his success as a writer.

GMercyU stood out to me because it provided training that centered people. Being able to connect what I was learning in the classroom to what I was experiencing professionally has been invaluable.

Arthur credits the program with helping him develop a deeper understanding of the experiences and perspectives that shape people's lives, insights that have influenced both his counseling work and his writing.

"Graduate school has taught me how to read, do research, think critically, organize my thoughts, and communicate clearly through my writing," Arthur said. "If you can finish graduate school, you can write a book."

Looking ahead, Arthur will complete his master's degree in December 2027, continue his work in behavioral health, and publish a second book, "The Hubris of Brown: Ten Black LGBTQ+ Short Stories," in 2027.

"You do not have to do everything at once, but you can continue to move forward little by little," Arthur said. "What kept me motivated was understanding why these goals were important to me and continuing to make progress every day."

The Prince of Brown: A Fictional Memoir is available through Amazon, Walmart, Barnes & Noble, and other major book retailers.
