SLP Students Participate in Service-Learning Project at Senior Living Community

Living out the Mercy Mission, GMercyU's Speech-Language Pathology graduate students recently participated in a meaningful service-learning project the Artman Senior Living Community with the Director of Clinical Education Jane Stuart.
The students spent the day connecting with residents through bouquet making, games, and conversation. The experience provided students with the opportunity to build relationships with older adults while gaining firsthand exposure to a senior living community that offers both personal care and skilled nursing services.
"This enriching experience fostered compassion, communication, and a deeper understanding of the unique needs of the aging population—reinforcing the importance of person-centered care in Speech-Language Pathology," GMercyU's Director of Clinical Education Jane Stuart, MA, CCC-SLP said.
Graduate students in GMercyU's Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (MSSLP) program offer complimentary speech and language services at various community placements under the supervision of licensed and certified GMercyU SLP faculty. These hands-on experiences allow students to actively participate in evaluations and intervention, including conducting comprehensive assessments and providing individualized therapy. Throughout the process, students receive mentorship and constructive feedback, helping them develop their clinical skills.
These services are provided at no cost to the community partner, ensuring accessible support for those in need. Students also participate in one-day service-learning opportunities at area organizations.
