CEU: Suicide and Sexual Fluidity Insights from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health

This training explores the elevated suicide risk experienced by LGBTQ+ persons compared to non-LGBTQ+ persons, with a focus on recent research findings examining the relationship between sexual fluidity and suicide risk. Participants will gain an understanding of the critical role that social belonging and connectedness play in shaping mental health outcomes. By the end of the session, attendees will be better equipped to understand current research and apply these insights to support suicide prevention efforts among LGBTQ+ populations.
Speaker:
Dr. John Gunn earned his B.A. in Psychology from Stockton University, his M.A. in Psychology from Rutgers University–Camden, and his Ph.D. in Family Science and Human Development from Montclair State University. He served as a Postdoctoral Associate at the New Jersey Gun Violence Research Center from 2019 to 2021 before joining Gwynedd Mercy University as an Assistant Professor of Psychology in 2021. His scholarship centers on suicidal thoughts and behaviors, with particular emphasis on risk and protective factors across the lifespan, theoretical frameworks of suicide, population-level trends, and suicide among LGBTQ+ populations. Dr. Gunn has authored 41 peer-reviewed articles, edited four books, and delivered 24 conference presentations.
