CEU: Understanding Ageism and Its Impact on Mental Health
Presented in partnership with GMercyU Behavioral Health Institute and Acts Retirement-Life Communities (1 CE)
This session will provide an overview of ageism, including its key components, common settings in which it occurs, and the stereotypes, biases, and misconceptions that influence attitudes toward aging and older adults. Participants will also explore the impact of ageism on older adults’ physical and mental health and well-being, as well as practical strategies to reduce age-related bias in professional practice and everyday interactions.
Speakers:
Dr. Katie Reilly serves as Corporate Director of Cognitive Well-Being for Acts Communities Retirement-Life. Katie is a gerontologist by background and has spent over 15 years working in the senior living industry in roles including life engagement, social services, and operations, as well as community-based memory support services. Katie holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Gwynedd Mercy University, a Master’s degree in Gerontology from Saint Joseph’s University, and a PhD in Leadership and Gerontology from Concordia University Chicago. Katie is a Certified Dementia Practitioner, a member of the Eastern PA Geriatrics Society, and a 2018 LeadingAge PA Fellow in Leadership. In addition to her work with Acts, Katie works as an adjunct instructor at a local university teaching courses on aging and dementia and is a frequent speaker on a variety of topics including understanding cognitive change, caregiver support, enhancing cognitive health, and understanding ageism.
