Follow our Bachelor of Science in Nursing students as they complete a three-week program at the University of Limerick in Ireland.
About the Program
GMercyU uniquely offers undergraduate nursing students the opportunity to earn six credits while studying abroad. Available to BSN students completing their sophomore or junior year, this three-week program takes place in early summer at the University of Limerick in Ireland. Students live in the residence halls and are accompanied GMercyU faculty. Students also have the opportunity to shadow a registered nurse in a healthcare setting. Financial assistance is available. Final Day and Recap
During the program, GMercyU students had the opportunity to have a clinical experience in St. John’s Hospital and the University Hospital of Limerick.
The clinical experience was a lot more laid back compared to the experience back home. We received more breaks than we do at home, and everyone was so excited to have American students there.
Many of the nurses we spoke to mentioned that the healthcare system in America is more advanced. For example, a nurse's salary in Ireland is significantly less than America and they don’t need to take an NCLEX exam. At St. John's hospital in Ireland, they used paper to document all patient information and didn’t have a special program to pull medication; instead, they wheeled a medication cart around. In America, we use the computer with advanced technology to document and save patient information. We also use a special Pyxis system to pull patient medications.
