Master's in Nursing Education

Help Meet the Urgent Need for Nurse Educators

In 2013, nearly 80,000 qualified nursing school applicants were turned away from programs due to faculty shortages.  If you’re an experienced RN, you can develop the skills you need to meet demand for nursing educators with two years of study at Gwynedd Mercy University.

The GMercyU Difference

Our 37-credit Master of Science in Nursing – Nurse Educator (MSN-NE) program equips you to teach student nurses in clinical college programs, thanks to its focus on:

  • Advanced clinical knowledge
  • In-depth exploration of evidence-based practice and research skill development
  • Theories of teaching, learning, and curriculum design
  • Practical clinical and teaching experience

This program is available on our Main Campus in Gwynedd Valley, Pennsylvania, with clinical practicum opportunities at a wide range of GMercyU’s health care affiliate organizations throughout the region. We keep classes small so that you can develop close working relationships with our faculty and your classmates.

After graduation, you should be prepared to pursue roles teaching in undergraduate nursing programs. The MSN-NE also provides the academic foundation you need to pursue a doctoral degree in nursing, such as our Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program.

What You Will Learn – Nurse Educator Master’s Degree Program

In the MSN-NE program, you’ll extend your own clinical practice capabilities and pursue advanced training in scientific research and professional writing. You’ll build on this foundation with additional training in teaching and curriculum design, ensuring you have the practical instructional skills and mastery of content you need to confidently train student nurses.

As a GMercyU Master of Science in Nursing graduate, you will be able to:

  • Collaborate with colleagues and consumers to provide and improve nursing education
  • Demonstrate expertise as a nurse educator by the assessment of the needs of learners, selection of content, and implementation of a curriculum to achieve specified learning outcomes
  • Demonstrate professionalism as a nurse educator grounded in the Mercy tradition
  • Demonstrate social responsibility for individuals, families, and communities within the context of a multicultural society
  • Utilize knowledge to provide holistic care in a defined area of nursing education in accordance with standards of practice and codes of ethics
  • Strategize to improve health for all by influencing policy
  • Synthesize knowledge from nursing and related disciplines as a foundation for evidence based practice as a nurse educator
  • Assume a leadership role in interpreting and promoting nursing education to members of the profession, to other disciplines, and to consumers
  • Contribute to advanced nursing knowledge through scientific inquiry
