S. Joan Loretta Henkel, RSM is a Sister of Mercy of the Americas. She entered the Mercy community in Dallas, Pa., but has lived in the Philadelphia area for the past 30 years. S. Joan received both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in psychology from Millersville University, and holds a master’s and doctoral degree in Psychology (PsyD) from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM).
She is a Pennsylvania board-licensed psychologist, with more than 30 years of counseling experience working in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and community agencies. Her main theoretical orientation is cognitive-behavioral therapy with a focus on addiction counseling, forensic psychology, and behavioral medicine, particularly with at-risk populations.
S. Joan retired from the Department of Corrections after 17 years, where she held the positions of Unit Manager at the State Correctional Institution at Chester and Assistant Director of Programs and Evaluations in Community Corrections. She taught in both the undergraduate and master’s in Community Counseling programs at Alvernia University and has been teaching as an adjunct instructor in the Psychology department at Gwynedd Mercy University for the past eight years.
S. Joan is a member of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association and a Certified Addictions Counselor Emeritus.
