When Felix was applying to colleges, he knew he wanted to major in Exercise Science and continue playing baseball. GMercyU, which had just launched its new Exercise Science degree, was the perfect fit for him. He was excited to be part of the new program.
As a first-year student, Felix has enjoyed his classes and the opportunities at GMercyU. He's currently taking Intro to Exercise Science, which covers topics such as exercise prescription, fitness assessment, and health promotion through physical activity.
“I have always been into sports, and learning the science behind it and how the body works during any athletic movements has been intriguing,” Felix said.
Internship Experience
He’s even already had his first internship experience just months into his first year of college at the Physical Development Center (PDC) in Warrington, Pa., thanks to Exercise Science Program Director Colin Pennington, PhD, who helped arrange it.
Felix interned at PDC in November and December last year, alongside a fellow Exercise Science major.
“PDC is a gym for athletes who are pursuing their college goals, and for people who just want to work out. They also have youth classes and a boxing lessons program for people with Parkinson’s Disease,” Felix explained. “At first, I observed trainers running their classes, then it became very hands-on. I was able to help run athletic classes for the youth athletes and be a part of some of the teen classes.”
Career Goals
Felix’s internship is on hold right now as he focuses on the upcoming baseball season and classes. He’s looking forward to future internship experiences as he pursues his career goals.
“I either want to be an athletic trainer, a physical therapist, or one day be able to run my own athletic gym or work at one, just like my internship,” he said. “Staying in the athletic field is something I’ve always wanted to do, and the Exercise Science Program so far has given me that opportunity.”
