Guided by Mercy, Bold in Justice: Sr. Cora Marie Billings' Legacy Celebrated During Mercy Week

Students, faculty, and staff gathered in University Hall on Sept. 22 for Guided by Mercy, Bold in Justice: Sr. Cora Marie Billings' Legacy, a Mercy Week event celebrating the faith, service, and advocacy of Cora Marie Billings, RSM, and the lasting influence she has had throughout her decades of ministry. 

Sponsored by the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and CORE Programs, the presentation explored Sr. Cora’s commitment to living the Mercy mission. Attendees learned about her many accomplishments, her dedication to human rights and social justice, and her more than 70 years as a Sister of Mercy. 

Drawing on stories from her personal and professional journey, Sr. Cora shared reflections on the experiences that shaped her vocation and the role family played throughout her life. Her remarks offered attendees a glimpse into the values and relationships that guided her path in ministry and service. 

A central theme of the program was using one's gifts and talents to serve others. Sr. Cora encouraged attendees to approach their work with purpose and intention while considering how their actions can positively impact their communities. 

Throughout the discussion, she emphasized the importance of perseverance, consistency, and collaboration. Attendees were challenged to think beyond themselves, recognize the needs of others, and consider how they can contribute to meaningful change. 

The event concluded with an invitation to embrace the Mercy tradition by responding to the world's challenges with courage, compassion, and a commitment to justice.
