GMercyU Selected for the FirstGen Forward Network

 

Gwynedd Mercy University (GMercyU) has been selected for the FirstGen Forward Network Class of 2026, a national initiative that helps colleges and universities strengthen experiences and outcomes for first-generation students.

First-generation students made up 56% of GMercyU’s incoming undergraduate class in 2025. The university prepares students of all backgrounds to earn their degrees and make a meaningful impact in their professions and communities.

GMercyU offers programs to foster belonging and success among first-generation students. The Griffin Scholars Program pairs incoming first-year students with faculty and staff mentors during their first two years, while SOAR, a pre-orientation program, helps students build confidence and connections before classes begin. Through GMercyU’s partnership with the Philadelphia-based Collective Success Network, first-generation and low-income students receive support in pursuing their goals, and the Tri-Alpha Honor Society chapter recognizes first-generation academic achievement. A First-Generation Resource Group connects first-generation faculty and staff, helping students see their experiences reflected in the people who teach and mentor them.

For first-generation students, succeeding in college can mean learning to navigate systems that are brand new to them. Our goal is to ensure students never feel they have to figure it out alone. Through the FirstGen Forward Network, we can deepen that support and build an even more connected experience for our students.

The FirstGen Forward Network helps institutions build comprehensive, sustainable approaches to first-generation student success. It provides participating institutions with research, data, professional development and opportunities to collaborate with peers nationwide. More than 500 higher education institutions, including two statewide systems, participate in the network across 48 states and the District of Columbia.
