GMercyU Hosts Annual Dean's Distinguished Lecture

Gwynedd Mercy University's Frances M. Maguire College of Nursing and Health Professions hosted its 21st annual Dean's Distinguished Lecture on March 18, 2026.
Regional President for Jefferson Health's North Region and GMercyU alum Brian Sweeney, RN, MBA, FACHE '94 '96 was this year's keynote speaker. The topic of Brian's lecture was "From Bedside to Boardroom: Shaping the Future of Healthcare and Its Workforce."
"Each year, we invite a distinguished leader to share insights that shape the future of nursing, health professions, and healthcare. Tonight, we are especially delighted to welcome Brian Sweeney, a proud alumnus and healthcare leader back home to Gwynedd Mercy University," Jane Tang, PhD, RN, NE-BC, Dean of the Frances M. Maguire College of Nursing and Health Professions said at the event.
In the lecture, Brian highlighted the realities that the healthcare industry and healthcare professionals face today and in the future, while also offering advice for current students who will soon enter the workforce.
"Healthcare is something that is a shared responsibility. It's not just something that hospitals have to worry about; any of us can need healthcare at any time. It's a community asset."
"So, the general public needs to completely understand what's happening in healthcare and how they can help, but also to create optimism about the potential for the future," Brian said in an interview prior to the event.
Brian currently serves as Regional President for Jefferson Health’s North Region, where he oversees a $3 billion network of six acute care hospitals and more than 25 ambulatory locations spanning three Pennsylvania counties. In this role, Brian leads strategy, operations, workforce development, and system integration efforts that advance Jefferson’s mission to improve lives and reimagine the future of healthcare delivery.
A clinician at heart and an operator by training, Brian began his career as an emergency and critical care nurse after earning both an associate and bachelor’s degree in nursing from GMercyU. Early experiences as a bedside nurse and flight nurse shaped his belief in the irreplaceable value of frontline caregivers and informed his systems-level approach to leadership.
Motivated by a desire to influence the broader business and operational dimensions of healthcare, he earned an MBA, which continues to anchor his leadership in analytical rigor, empathy, and disciplined execution. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Brian also shared how his training and experience and GMercyU served as a foundation throughout his career.
"I think most nursing programs are focused on clinical competencies and there's so much training that we have now available as a resource. When it comes right down to it, it's the empathy and the compassion with patient care that makes a difference," Brian said.
"That's where Gwynedd Mercy stands out because that's what patients and families notice most. Being able to not just be a good clinician, but also a good person is really important. I remember those skills were something that I learned at Gwynedd, and that's where I see the differences with nursing programs in my role."
The Dean's Distinguished Lecture was sponsored by the Frances M. Maguire College of Nursing and Health Professions and Iota Kappa Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. GMercyU healthcare students, alumni, and faculty and staff were invited to attend.
