Longtime Benefactor Named Individual Philanthropist of the Year
Gwynedd Mercy University longtime friend and benefactor Richard “Dick” Target was named the Individual Philanthropist of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals at its National Philanthropy Day Breakfast.
National Philanthropy Day is a national celebration recognizing the impact of philanthropy and those who advance it, and the Association of Fundraising Professionals – Greater Philadelphia Chapter has named this year’s award recipients, including Dick, who exemplify service and community impact.
Dick exemplifies the true spirit of service and philanthropy. A longtime supporter of GMercyU, he has championed student success through generous support of scholarships, faculty innovation, and hands-on research opportunities—especially within the sciences.
A U.S. Marine Corps Captain and senior engineer in the paper industry for over 45 years, Dick’s leadership extends well beyond campus. He’s a dedicated member of the University’s President’s Council, a Paul Harris Fellow with Rotary International, and a key supporter of Mercy Neighborhood Ministries, his local parish, and veterans’ services.
In Lower Gwynedd Township, where he’s lived for nearly 40 years, Dick served as Parks & Recreation Chair, mapping over 25 miles of local trails. Honored as the 2019 Citizen of the Year Award in Lower Gwynedd Township presented by the House of Representatives in Harrisburg, Dick remains most proud of his role as “POP.”
His life reflects a steadfast commitment to compassion, service, and community—embodying the very Mercy values he so powerfully uplifts.
As GMercyU’s Mercy in Motion Campaign enters its final weeks, ending December 31, we invite our community to follow Dick’s example of generosity and service. During this season of gratitude, you too can make an impact by participating in our #GriffinTuesday campaign on December 2. Your gift of any size helps invest in student success and continue the Mercy mission that inspires leaders like Dick.
