SLP Professor Collaborates with International Dyslexia Association
This summer, Dr. Yvonne D’Uva Howard, Assistant Professor of Speech-Language Pathology, co-chaired the Bringing Words to Life book study, an enriching professional collaboration through the International Dyslexia Association, PA., bringing together educators, scholars, administrators, and specialists from across the state and beyond.
Each session grounded participants in the research base and then guided them through practical activities to apply directly with students. One challenge that sparked lively discussion was creating “child-friendly” definitions, more complex and nuanced than it might first appear. The program’s highlight was an illuminating conversation with book co-author Dr. Margaret McKeown.
Before joining GMercyU, Dr. D’Uva Howard maintained a private SLP practice and contracted with rehabilitation agencies, early intervention, and K-12 schools in eastern Pennsylvania. Through her leadership, teaching, and research in vocabulary, language, literacy, and emerging educational technology applications, Dr. D’Uva Howard empowers GMercyU students to connect deeply with current scholarship and the wider language-literacy community.
