By Greg Gornick
Competition time! For the first time ever, the Gwynedd Mercy University Cheerleading team will be competing. From Friday, January 17 to Sunday, January 19, the Griffins will join Widener University, Monmouth University, and 2023-2024 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Game-Day Routine and Traditional Routine Champions Misericordia University among other National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III, Junior Colleges, and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) institutions at the 2024 Universal Cheerleader Association (UCA) College Cheerleading National Championship. The competition is scheduled to take place at Disney's Entertainment and Sports Programming Network (ESPN) Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida.
"I am excited for this journey ahead as we prepare to bring our first-ever GMercyU Cheer team to College Nationals! This competitive aspect of cheer is an exciting new chapter for our program and will further allow our current and future teams to grow and build a positive GMercyU reputation within the cheerleading community," said GMercyU Head Cheerleading Coach Heather Kilduff.
Gwynedd Mercy University earned entry into the 2024 UCA College Cheerleading National Championships last weekend (Sept. 14-15) with a blue-ribbon performance at their first-ever UCA Home Cheerleading Camp. The Griffins thrilled judges with stunting skills, sideline cheers, and a game-day routine that will be on display throughout the upcoming Gwynedd Mercy University men's and women's basketball seasons. At the 2024 UCA College Cheerleading National Championships, Gwynedd Mercy University will be asked to perform a three-part routine, including a fight song, a situational sideline cheer, and a timeout rally as part of the Game-Day Division showcase. The competition will be aired live on VarsityTV and FloSports; further information on how to watch will be provided at a later date.
Leading up to the competition, the Gwynedd Mercy University Cheerleading team is hosting a t-shirt fundraiser to help offset the cost of travel. At donations levels of $50, $500, $1,000, and $5,000, sponsors can display their business logo on the t-shirts that the Griffin Cheerleaders toss to fans during the home men's and women's basketball contests.
