Social Work Students Attend Advocacy Day in Harrisburg
On Tuesday, March 19, GMercyU Social Work students traveled to Harrisburg, Pa. to attend the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Legislative Education and Advocacy Day (LEAD). Attendance to the event was part of the students’ Human Behavior in the Social Environment course. At the NASW LEAD, students engaged in hands-on learning g on how to advocate for social policy and the legislative process.
“My personal experience at LEAD was very inspiring. When we first arrived, I was nervous and really did not think that we would make much of a difference, but I was wrong. So many students, teachers, news casters, government officials, and fellow social workers watched as we marched to the Capital with signs in our hands and chanting for a meaningful cause and a hope for change,” said Social Work major Erin Huggard ’26
“I loved hearing the stories of government officials, medical professionals, and teachers speak about how their lives were touched by the work of social workers. Fighting for bills 1500 and 1841 to be approved not only will affect me, but future social workers as well. As a student, I view the profession of social work as not only inspiring, but life changing. I look forward to the changes I make in the field,” Erin said.
