Experts Offer Job Searching Tips for Recent Grads

Gwynedd Mercy University's Director of Career Development, Nick Schaefer, was recently interviewed as an expert for two articles in the Philadelphia Inquirer. He offered his expertise to help publish the articles "Tips for college graduates on finding jobs as a better economy beckons" and "Getting a job in 2021: More tips for college graduates on job searches, remote work, and more."

The COVID-19 pandemic has shifted the way the world works, with virtual meetings and remote work becoming the norm. While there have been many challenges associated with the abrupt shift to virtual working and learning, there also have been many positives, too.

"Technology has leveled the playing fields," said Schaefer. "It's helped us reach nationwide jobs. That's a win-win-win for us."

There are online platforms such as Handshake or Symplicity to conduct virtual job fairs, which became critical when it was unsafe to gather in large numbers in person. Additionally, thanks to virtual work environments, new doors have opened for students to pursue internships and jobs outside of their immediate area, both nationally and internationally.

Since graduates have more opportunities to apply for, it also means there's more competition.

"Find ways to stand out, like creating an online portfolio that demonstrates your excellence," said Schaefer. You can include things like your grades, special projects, medical lab work, experiences, and more.
