High School Students Visit GMercyU to Participate in Accounting Career Day

More than 100 high school students from four different school districts visited Gwynedd Mercy University on Tuesday, November 19 to take part in Accounting Career Day hosted by the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA). Over the course of the day, the students heard from experts in the business, finance, and accounting industries while getting a taste of what a career in accounting or business is like.

The morning kicked off with a welcome from the GMercyU’s Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Mary Van Brunt, PhD, Accounting Program Coordinator and Assistant Professor, Carlo Silvesti, CPA, CGMA, MBA, and the GMercyU Admissions Team.

GMercyU was honored to have a keynote speaker, Dave Magrogan, who gave a motivating presentation encouraging students to find what they’re passionate about and charge towards it like a fearless, unstoppable rhino. After switching careers from a chiropractor to a restauranteur, Dave is now the CEO and owner of the Dave Magrogan Group, a company that owns various restaurant chains including Harvest Seasonal Grill and Wine Bar. The Dave Magrogan Group also formerly owned successful restaurants such as Kildare’s Irish Pub, Barra Rossa, and Doc Magrogan’s Oyster House.

Following Dave's presentation, students were divided into smaller groups to hear from more experts in the field, in addition to a college panel featuring current GMercyU Accounting students. Thank you to all the professionals who came to share their stories and experiences with the next generation of business leaders:

  • Nate Cooper, Komfort Heat
  • Lauren Lear, RSM US
  • Wendy Yip, FMC Corporation

Students ended the day-long event with campus tours and lunch with current GMercyU Griffins. They left campus with a new understanding of what options await in the accounting and business fields.
