Class of 2017 Celebrates Last Lecture

With Commencement less than a month away, Gwynedd Mercy University hosted one of its most treasured traditions, Last Lecture, on Wednesday, April 19, 2017. Since 2008, GMercyU seniors have selected a beloved faculty member to give a farewell address. The Class of 2017 selected Assistant Professor of Chemistry Thomas Umile, PhD to deliver this year's speech.

Catherine McAuley's famous quote "the simplest and most practical lesson I know is to resolve to be good today but better tomorrow" served as the theme of Dr. Umile's address. While the graduating seniors certainly deserve to celebrate their accomplishments, his wish is that they continue to their passion for learning.

"Although your diploma will be evidence that you did complete something, it also stands that you can complete anything you put your mind to," Dr. Umile said. "The diploma doesn't mean you're done. It means you and everyone around you can now expect more out of you in the days, weeks, and years to come."

No matter what curveballs life throws, Dr. Umile is confident the soon-to-be graduates have the values and skills needed to succeed.

"There are lots of ways you can be better tomorrow. Hopefully, you will find your own way to put these words into practice," Dr. Umile said. "Find your own way to cultivate the gifts you have been given so that you and those around you can grow and prosper."
