Hobbit House Materials and Furnishings Donated to Local Organizations

Gwynedd Mercy University donated materials and furnishings from Hobbit House to local organizations in the area with the help of plant services and representatives from Gwynedd Mercy Academy. The project started with more than 4,000 books being donated to a deserving library. From there, outreach began and prorams that would benefit from Hobbit House's supplies were identified.

"While change can be difficult and we are saddened at the closure of Hobbit House, it is wonderful that the resources are being repurposed and distributed to organizations that are using them to have immediate, meaningful impact on the lives and education of young children. We are happy to be able to continue the Mercy tradition of giving back and are grateful that the legacy of the Hobbit House and Valie Genuardi is being fulfilled through these donations," said Mary Sortino, Dean, School of Business and Education.

The Drueding Center, one of the organizations who received the donations, is a social service agency that focuses on programs for individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness. The organization will be distributing the donations amongst their connections.

Other organizations who accepted Hobbit House Donations include Mater Dei Catholic School, OLM/St. Alphonsus School, St. Athony School, St. Catherine School, St. Luke School, St. Malachy School, Mercy Neighborhood Mission and Ministry and Camp Inspire.

"In the name of Mater Dei Catholic School, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation for the wonderful preschool furniture, games, manipulatives, and library books we received from Hobbit House. This amazing donation will assist us greatly as we prepare to expand the Master Dei Pre-School Program. Your wonderful generosity is beyond any expectation," said Diane McCaughan, President of Mater Dei Catholic School.

The Valie Genuardi Hobbit House was a licensed child development Nursery and Preschool on GMercyU's campus. The school was closed in March 2020 due to COV ID-19 and after a difficult decision, will not reopen.
