GMercyU's Peer Mentoring Association Hosts Common Hour
Gwynedd Mercy University’s Peer Mentoring Association hosted a panel discussion during Common hour on Wednesday, January 27, 2016. The GMercyU community came together to talk about the issue of mental illness and how it affects not only those who are diagnosed with a mental illness but also those around them.
During the panel, the Peer Mentoring Association brought in a few people to drive the conversation on mental health. Those speakers included GMercyU Nursing professor Dr. Barbara Jones, Best Buddies President and Director Stephanie Holtz, Peer Mentoring Association President Alex Masterson, and students Steven Peters and Gabbie Niemczyk. Each speaker introduced themselves and to spoke on the issues of mental illness.
Peer Mentor Association President Alex Masterson was one of the keynote speakers on the panel and had the opportunity to discuss the problems mental illness have had on her and how it affected her. She is truly an inspiration and is a prime example that mental illness is not something that can stop you from doing what you love.
Panels such as these are so vital to the GMercyU community because it allows people to come together and discuss what they are going through without feeling judged. It also gives support to people and shows them that they are not alone.
