GMercyU Occupational Therapy Students Volunteer at Life Rolls on Event

On Sunday, August 4, 2019, Katie Barron and Emmie Santoleri, graduate students in the Masters of Occupational Therapy program at Gwynedd Mercy University, joined their professor Dr. Mindy MacRone-Wojton, in volunteering at They Will Surf Again, an adaptive surfing event in Wildwood, New Jersey presented by Life Rolls On.

Life Rolls On is an organization that focuses on improving the quality of life for people affected by spinal cord injury and other disabilities through sports such as surfing and skating, to inspire infinite possibilities.

More than 500 volunteers supported more than 100 athletes with disabilities in experiencing the thrill of surfing. Volunteers helped athletes transfer from wheelchairs to surfboards, carried athletes to the water on their surfboards, guided the surfboards from the deep to shallow water, and cheered on the bravery of the athletes.

Katie and Emmie reported that the event provided them with the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have gained in the classroom, support individuals in leisure participation, and have fun while doing so. They connected with many inspiring athletes, families, health care students, and professionals who worked together to create an amazing experience for all involved.
