One of GMercyU’s own nursing adjunct professors, Sherri Becker, RN, DNP, contributed an article to the Philadelphia Inquirer entitled “Put the seat down: The new toilet etiquette for when you have guests over during COVID-19.”
In her article, Professor Becker explains how diseases like the coronavirus aren’t just transferred by respiratory droplets, but can also potentially be spread through other bodily fluids. She further explains various ways to keep yourself safe, both at home and in public restrooms.
“When a toilet is flushed with the lid open, it disperses aerosol droplets called a toilet plume. These particles mix in the air in the room and can land and contaminate surfaces,” said Professor Becker in the article. “Research suggests that toilet plume could play a contributory role in the transmission of infectious diseases, such as coronavirus.”
