GMercyU Earns Special Designation as a PNGAS Guard–Friendly School

May 19, 2021

Gwynedd Mercy University has been named a “PNGAS Guard–Friendly School” by the Pennsylvania National Guard Associations (PNGAS). Of the more than 480 Pennsylvania schools that are eligible to receive tuition funding from the Pennsylvania National Guard’s Education Assistance Program (EAP) in 2021, only 48 learning institutions have been awarded this distinction. This is the second year in a row that GMercyU has earned the distinction.

The PNGAS Guard–Friendly School standards were developed by the PNGAS Education Advisory Council and designed to recognize colleges, universities, and trade schools that meet or exceed ten baseline criteria for creating a supportive learning environment that assists members of the Pennsylvania Guard in pursuing post-secondary degrees. These criteria include:

  • providing flexible scheduling options for National Guard members whose class availability may be disrupted due to the scheduling requirements of their Guard service
  • providing credit for prior learning via military training and experience in accordance with American Council on Education (ACE) college credit recommendations
  • offering training for school faculty and/or staff on how to support the specific needs of military and veteran students.

GMercyU is also a five-time G.I. Jobs Military Friendly School that participates in all VA educational benefits programs. Students are offered flexible on-campus, online, and accelerated degree options to suit military student needs. There is also no cap for the number of students who can receive Yellow Ribbon benefits.

Additionally, GMercyU also has the Student Veterans Association, an organization that serves as a support group for veterans and loved ones returning to or entering academic life. The organization prides itself on creating a comfortable and friendly environment where members join together and create a seamless transition from military life to civilian academic life.
