I’ve always wanted to become a teacher, but not necessarily on an Apache Reservation in Arizona. Earning my Gwynedd Mercy University teaching degree, followed by my time at Columbia University’s Teachers College, widened my lens and gave me a thirst for learning about new people and places. I student-taught with some GMercyU alumnae at the St. Charles School on the San Carlos Reservation, and was drawn back here for a full-time teaching job at Rice Elementary School.
Located two hours east of Phoenix, San Carlos is in the middle of nowhere. I moved here from New York City, and it’s been a big adjustment. I’ve been invited to Native American ceremonies, have witnessed poverty in a rural setting, and have battled 110 degree weather.
I view my job teaching at Rice Elementary as a stepping stone; I’ll gain some experience and skills in the classroom and then hopefully move on to another exciting opportunity.
