Current Position: Medical Dosimetry Student
“I had a great experience with GMercyU’s program,” said Alyssa Rivera, reflecting on her time in our 2+2 Radiologic Technology Program. The program offers students two years of foundational courses at GMercyU followed by two years of learning out in the field.
“I spent the first two years on campus, and then I went closer to my home in South Jersey for the two years of clinical,” she said. “My clinical was based out of Shore Medical Center in Somers Point, NJ; they sent me to five different locations over my junior and senior year.”
Alyssa enjoyed living on campus her first two years of the program. “I joined the cheerleading team and when I wasn’t at practice or a game, I was either studying or working out in the cardio room [of Griffin Complex],” she said.
Alyssa graduated summa cum laude from GMercyU in 2017. Afterward, she landed a full-time position at an outpatient imaging facility in Manahawkin, NJ, called Health Village Imaging. She worked there full time for two years before deciding to continue her education – personal experiences had inspired her to pursue the field of radiation oncology.
“Watching loved ones battle with cancer gave me the extra push to continue my education and focus my career on something I had become so passionate about,” Alyssa told us.
In the fall of 2019, Alyssa enrolled as a full-time student at Thomas Jefferson University for their one-year Medical Dosimetry program. Medical Dosimetry is an advanced field of radiologic technology that involves planning radiation treatments for cancer patients. Thomas Jefferson University offers one of the only dosimetry programs in the area and, therefore, it is highly competitive.
After she completes the program, Alyssa plans to prepare for the Medical Dosimetry Certification Exam and then integrate into the radiation oncology field.
