Accelerated Online Masters (MS) in School Counseling
The Master’s in School Counseling online and accelerated degree program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive in a convenient and supportive format. Built around a full-time work schedule, the Master’s in School Counseling program provides a flexible, comprehensive course of study for school counselors in training.
The online Master’s in School Counseling program is divided into three sequences, integrating theory and research with field experiences in the various competency areas. All courses are taught by practicing certified professionals in the field, so students develop their professional contacts while they learn. Students who complete this graduate program successfully will be eligible for certification as Elementary or Secondary School Counselors within the state of Pennsylvania, with a dual certification option available.

This Master of Science in School Counseling program is particularly focused on the studies of behavioral sciences and helping processes, with curriculum that lines up with the American School Counselors Association National Model. Students are encouraged to review and reflect upon counseling practices frequently in order to be as effective as possible in light of the latest research findings and other information relevant to the field. Opportunities to work with children and adolescents in supervised practicum settings also provide an environment where counselors in training can apply knowledge and gain valuable feedback to adjust behaviors as necessary. The counselor’s responsibilities toward parents, schools, and communities are also stressed during this comprehensive, accelerated, and cohort-based master’s degree program.
The online Master in School Counseling program at Gwynedd Mercy University consists of 48 credit hours in the three sequences of Core Education Program Courses, Core Counseling Courses, and Practicum/Field Experience. To earn either the Elementary School Counselor Certification or Secondary School Counselor Certification, students will complete the following:
- 12 credits of Core Education Program Courses
- 30 credits of Core Counseling Courses
- 6 credits of Practicum/Field Experience
The 6-credit Practicum/Field Experience sequence consists of 300 hours working with children and/or adolescents in supervised practicum settings. Students may also choose to complete an additional 6 credits to earn both the Elementary and Secondary School Counselor Certifications.
