Gwynedd Mercy University's Master of Science in Special Education is now offered fully online and in an accelerated format, offering students the flexibility and ease of obtaining an advanced degree in a convenient format.

 

Master of Science in PreK-8 Special Education

The Master of Science in Special Education program offers two options:  1) preparation for and certification as a PreK-8 Special Education Teacher or 2) preparation for and certification as a PreK-8 Special Education Teacher with Autism Endorsement. The program seeks to provide a strong grounding in the skills necessary for further professional development in the field of education specifically dealing with students with special needs in PreK through 8th grade.  The curriculum is designed to encourage reflective practice whereby the teacher consistently reviews his/her behavior in light of its effectiveness and in relation to the scientific researched based data. The program course sequence integrates theory and research knowledge with appropriate field experiences in the various competency areas.  Students who complete the graduate program successfully will be eligible for certification in special education within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  

There is also a certification only option for those who hold an Instructional I certification and a Master's Degree.


This program is appropriate for applicants who:

  • hold an Instructional I certificate, and are seeking a Master of Science degree in Special Education with special education certification,
  • hold an Instructional I certificate, and who wish to be certified with a concentration in special education,
  • hold an Instructional I certificate and a master’s degree in education, and who are seeking certification in special education (*may apply for the special education certification portion of the program)

SPE 564 Behavior Management Skill for the Special Learner
EDU/SPE 601 Action Research (not required for certification only)
Total Credits for the MS in Special Education: 30 credits

Special Education Certification w/Autism* (27 credits)
